- The Lego Group is leaning on renewable energy sources and working to lower its dependency on fossil fuels to cut its operational, or scope 1 and scope 2, emissions.
- To cut its scope 1 emissions, the toymaker said in a blog post last week it was using renewable energy to power heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at its new factory in Vietnam and had transitioned away from gas heating to the local district heating network — mostly powered by renewable energy — at its headquarters in Billund, Denmark.
- For scope 2 emission reductions, the company said its approach focused on decreasing how much energy it used and increasing its reliance on renewable energy sources like solar. Lego said 5.8% of its energy use is supported by renewable energy it owns, up 61% in capacity, compared to 2024.
Dive Insight:
The company said in the Aug. 6 post that it has taken a “range of steps across [its] sites to drive reductions.” This includes the solar panels and solar parks it has installed on or near its production sites and investments it has made to improve energy efficiency.
Lego said its current projects include the construction of its largest solar project to date at its headquarters in Billund, which is expected to generate enough clean power to match its total onsite yearly electricity consumption. The company said it is also backing the construction of a solar park in Virginia, which will have 30,000 solar panels and rooftop solar installations.
These projects are in addition to the rooftop solar panels and battery energy storage solutions Lego is developing for its manufacturing site in Vietnam. Last year, the company said it had installed over 12,400 rooftop solar panels at the Vietnam factory and that the site is predicted to have a total solar power capacity of around 7.34-megawatt peak — the unit of measurement for the maximum power output a solar photovoltaic system can produce.
In 2025, Lego announced a goal to increase its global solar capacity by 72% by the end of that year to reduce its carbon footprint. At the time, the company said it would look to ramp up solar power capacity across its production sites and had already begun developing infrastructure in Hungary and its factory in Vietnam.
Lego also said last week that nearly half of its company cars are now run on electric power and that it would continue to transition its global vehicle fleet.
The company has a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and to reduce its absolute carbon emissions by 37% by 2032, compared to a 2019 baseline.
